A good mirror is hard to find.
I think all bicycle and motorcycle mirrors used to be like this one: large, flat mirrors on stems long enough to get them out past your arm and up near eye level. The last five mirrors I bought turned out to be convex ones on short stems. I ended up mounting a pair under my handlebars because I couldn't see past my arms when they were right side up. The photos compare a convex mirror to my new flat one. I'm looking at a car 100 feet behind me, early on a bright afternoon. Riding, I want to see everything at least 600 feet back. A vehicle might not contrast very well with its background, and the light might not be as good. I can't rely on a convex mirror. The old mirror is 25" from my eyes, while the new one is only 15" away. Because it's fairly close, if it's not adjusted to see where I want to see, I can simply move my head a little. I would not have been able to get the new clamp around my handlebar. I used a set of sockets and a pair of channel lock pliers. I'd squeeze the ends of the clamp to bend it around a small socket and work my way up to a socket as fat as my handlebar. The clamp held my bar nicely, but I had to keep tightening until the stem didn't turn freely in the clamp. The ability to turn may prevent damage one day, but I don't want it loose enough to turn as I ride. On the stem at the mirror end, a nut can be loosened to turn the mirror around for use on the right side. I'm thinking of buying a second one to have on hand in case I damage this one. A good mirror is hard to find.

My husband wanted a more old-fashioned one and so I got him this one while I used a mirror at the end of my handlebar. Initially I liked mine better since it was nice and compact, but then I realized it had some limitations, like the bike couldn't be laid down on that side. It also stuck out so if I had to get through a tighter fit I chanced clipping the mirror.
Eventually, I decided to try this one. I really like how much you can see in this mirror. You do have to fit it tightly or you'll find it slipping a little. And since the arm is long you'll have to be careful about placement if you plan to lay the bike on it's side. The clip is metal and will mold around the handlebar, but I wouldn't use this on powdered coated bars without a buffer. I thought about using this for my folding bike that has powder coating on the bars, but when we started to put it on I stopped for fear of scratching it.

Yeah, this is the real deal for a commuter hybrid bike. Not light, feels more like a motorcycle mirror, but stable, and can mount in a spot wide enough out that gives a good view of traffic behind me, with only a quick glance.

Yes, the mounting can be a pain, and to mount it where I wanted, I had to trim off some of the rubber grip on my handlebar end. It's worth it, because the rear-view performance and speed of getting this adjusted at ride start are excellent, and on my commute, safety is my #1 priority.
So yes, you may have to get out the vise grips to squeeze the mount around to get the bolt thru, and apply a little body english to the process.
To paraphrase Winston Churchill... "this is absolutely the worst bike mirror ever... except for every other bike mirror I have tried." For my flat handlebar commuter hybrid, it's the best bike mirror ever, of the ones I have tried. And yes, I've used helmet mount mirrors, and before this I had a handlebar end velcro mount mirror that was OK. But for a hybrid commuter bike, this is the best, because:

    1) Light weight is not a top priority (safety is); 2) It can be mounted well on flat handlebars; 3) The "fiddle factor", having to fiddle with it at ride start to get it in the right position, is quick and easy, another big safety plus; and 4) It's fast and easy to adjust while riding, say if you change riding positions, without being unsafe on the road while adjusting it. 5) Because of how this mounts, and almost clunky, retro look, it would be an unappealing target for thieves, thus is reasonably safe to leave on your commuter bike when parked. 6) If it did ever get stolen by some jerkwad thief, it's not that expensive to replace. 7) In the morning, getting on the bike and riding, things need to be simple and just be there. No complicated setup sequences, no fiddling with helmet mirrors, no making sure to grab the right helmet with the mirror, just climb on and ride.

All those comments primarily apply to a hybrid commuter bike. For a drop-handlebar road bike, there are other, better choices, like the STI shifter mount mirrors, if they fit your bike

This mirror gives a good view of the road behind, without having to hunch over or twist- it's quite large (nice, that, from my riding position- upright, beach cruiser) but the long arm means it is out past my arm and there is a decent amount of mirror to look in- as it's on quite a long arm it does wobble a bit over rough pavement but because there's enough glass to look in it's possible to see what's coming up behind.

The clamp arrived bent double. Took it off, stretched it open over my handlebar and then squeezed it down with a pair of channel-lock pliers. Then passed the screw-thread of the arm through the holes and tightened it down. It clamps up tightly enough that I am unable to rotate the arm. The only time it gets out of adjustment is when I now knock it on the doorway of my garage bringing the bike out- that's how wide it is! (Not a bad thing, as stated above).

I've treated the brightwork to a coat of wax polish, hopefully that'll extend the life of the finish- about the only thing I would suggest in terms of maintenance, by the looks of it.
