these are super easy to install and make slick-soled cycling shoes feel much more stable with SPD cleats installed. used them training all year and for a century ride, they've got some scuffs and scrapes but they've held up fine. i read some reviews that said the rubbery part tore off but mine have held up fine.

I saw the other negative reviews but bought these any way because I had already bought SH-R088L shoes and it was simpler than switching to Look-type (3-hole) cleats and replacing my pedals as well. However I have been seriously disappointed by this cleat adaptor. Its a great idea to shield the cleat and without it one tends to slip while walking. But this is such poorly made product that they have fallen to pieces in just one use. I wore my new shoes for a single 30km ride on paved roads and may have walked across a couple of traffic intersections. Two of the four rubber caps came off and the toy-grade plastic is worn down. I have never been disappointed by a Shimano product before but this has been a complete waste of money. Shimano needs to come up with a better product to serve this purpose.

Needed to mount 2 bolt cleats on road shoes which I prefer because it is difficult at best to walk on a 3 bolt cleat but the rails are affixed to the base by some industrial adhesive which is not as durable as needed. They usually come apart within a few months of daily riding.

The basic function of these adapters, to allow you to use a 2-bolt cleat on a shoe set up for 3 bolts, works fine. However, the rails on either side of the cleat broke during their third use on a 65 mile ride. The fronts of the rails separated from the base for about half of the rail length. This looks like a design flaw. The base needs to be stiff but the rails are put under stress during strong peddling and can't flex. This is not dangerous as the base plate itself remains intact and the cleats continue to function fine. However, I do not expect the rails to remain on the base as they can now snag on objects when I'm walking. Having the rails is a nice feature because it makes it easier to walk and protects floors from being marred by the cleats, but they don't stand up to use.

I was concerned about the durability of this item based on reviews, but I now feel that Shimano has hit a home run. These adapters make it possible to use a two screw cleat on a three hole road shoe. I have not experienced any of the excessive wear problems mentioned in other reviews. I ride 25 to 40 miles every other day, always on concrete road ways, and have been very satisfied with their durability.
UPDATE and DOWNGRADE to 3 Star Rating--- I have to tell everyone that after 8 months, the rubber strips on each side of the cleats have begun to come loose leaving a hard plastic rail. The rail is a little slick on smooth floors at first but after a little wear on concrete they are roughed up and are no longer a slip hazard. They don't look as good but they still make it possible to use your SPD cleats on a 3 hole biking shoe.

I've only done one ride with these on new shoes and they were a great improvement over my touring shoes. Everything felt great, but after the ride, I noticed that the rubber that touches the grouns is separated from the plastic. I hope to find some sort of glue that will hold, but I am now looking at Time pedals that have rubberized cleats that apparently hold up well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not as described - Not an adapter but a 'make walking in two-hole cleats easierer"
Reviewed in Canada on November 15, 2013
This is not an adapter; despite some reviews, it will not let you mount a 2 hole cleat on a 3 hole shoe. You need a two hole shoe to begin with. As such, this is useless; it does not adapt or convert anything, let alone "3 bolt to 2 bolt" as the name suggests. From what I can gather, all this product does is recess the cleat by putting some material around it to make walking easier in whose that otherwise have an exposed cleat (ie, a true road cycling shoe vs. mtd bike shoe).

Amazon needs to update the description.
